In May we reflected on Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month – the 2025 theme in Queensland is: Take positive action today to build a safer Queensland. A staggering 1 in 5 Australian adults have experienced violence1 and domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness2.

Queensland Country Bank's ICT Team are answering the call, announcing our ongoing support of DV Safe Phone, an incredible organisation working with police, government and charity partners to connect survivors escaping domestic violence with an emergency phone.

These phones are a vital lifeline in gaining access to a network of support services, safety planning tools and everyday finances.

12,557 domestic violence victims have already been provided with a safe phone thanks to the program.

Carl Mathieson (Head of ICT at Queensland Country Bank), learnt of the work of DV Safe Phone and brought up the idea of donating our retired phones to his team. By lunchtime, Chris Stone (IT Team Leader) and his Team had 20 phones prepped and ready to go; with another 20+ ready the next day.

"We were all inspired by Carl’s idea, I think it's a great cause where we can make a real difference" said Chris.

It’s not just a phone, it’s hope.

Annie Venables - Sustainability Manager, added that the repurposing of these phones is a fabulous example of sustainability in action.

“We are actively working to reduce waste going to landfill whilst seeking out meaningful opportunities to reuse and repurpose.”

“Our IT team are once again leading the way by turning what was formerly e-waste into a simple but powerful force for good" Annie said.
